Nadyas Parents:

  • Nadyas father is Edward Doud Suleman, 67, formerly in the Iraqi military
  • Nadyas mother is Angla Victoria Suleman, a retired teacher
  • Nadyas parents married in Las Vegas in 1974 and divorced in Las Vegas in 1999, but still live together
  • Nadyas Father works as contractor in Iraq. Says he is returning to his native Iraq as a translator and driver in order to financially support his daughter and her children.
  • Nadyas parents income is $8,740 per month
  • Nadya's mother cares for the 6 other children
  • Nadyas mother is a homemaker of Lithuanian decent
  • Nadyas father is an Iraq-born contractor, restaurateur and later a realtor.
  • Nadya claims her father wanted 4 or 5 kids but her mother didn’t want any because she had grown up with abuse.

Living Conditions:
  • Lives with parents in Whittier, CA - an LA suburb 25 miles from Hollywood
  • Lives with parents and 6 children in a run-down 3 bedroom, 1,550 sq ft bungalow
  • Reporters visited the house she lives in and called it "filthy"
  • There are broken toys, rusting pushchairs and kids bikes on the lawn.
  • Nadya's mother said she won't have enough space for the octuplets when they are released from the hospital
  • A minor protest was held outside the Suleman home
  • The 3 bedroom home Nadya, her parents, and 6 older children have been living in is in foreclosure.
  • The home went into default on Feb 9 after 10 months of non-payment.
  • The family is $23,225 behind in mortgage payments to lender IndyMac
  • The house could be sold at auction May 5.

The procedure:
  • Had 6 embryos implanted, resulted in octuplets
  • Has 6 other children, all born via IVF (In-vitro Fertilization)
  • Had IVF at a Beverly Hills clinic, "West Coast IVF Clinic" on Rodeo Drive
  • Dr. Michael Kamrava, a well-known and controversial specialist who pioneered a method of implantation, performed the IVF
  • Last year Nadya had her last 6 embryos all implanted at once, 2 became twins, resulting in 8 births.
  • Nadya said she had 6 embryos implanted for each of her pregnancies. Later she said she had 5 implanted in the all the pregnancies except the octuplets, which had 6. Then she said that she had "5 or 6" implanted each time. Later she said that she had 5 implanted the first 4 pregnancies that resulted in single births, but then decided to have 6 implanted due to her age, which resulted in twins. She then had 6 implanted in the pregnancy that resulted in the octuplets.
  • Medical ethicists say that no more than 3 embryos should be implanted at a time in a woman of her age. Two is the recommended number.
  • ,Nadya had 6 frozen embryos left at her clinic and her doctor, Dr. Michael Kamrava of the West Coast IVF Clinic in Beverly Hills, agreed to implant all of them.

The Finances:
  • Nadya declared bankruptcy in 2007
  • Nadya's parents filed for bankruptcy in March 2008, claiming nearly $1 million in liabilities
  • Nadya's parents abandoned a second home in late 2007.
  • Owes $50,000 in student loans
  • Admits she's spent at least $100,000 on IVF procedures
  • The cost of delivering the octuplets and keeping them in neonatal intensive care until they are ready to leave the hospital will be $1.5 million to $3 million.
  • All the usual donators in multiple births refused to give free items.
  • Asked for money via a website
  • Hired a PR firm
  • Receives $490 per month in food stamps, has for the last 18 months
  • Receives WIC
  • Is on disability for "back injury", "depression"
  • Still being paid by the psychiatric clinic where she was injured 10 yrs ago
  • Claimed she does not receive any welfare or government assistance
  • Parents forced to sell their vacation home last year (possibly refers to the 2nd home they abandoned)
  • Received more then $165,000 from "back injury" sustained at work in a psychiatric hospital during a small riot, when a patient reportedly threw a chair at her.
  • A nanny, Araceli Castro, is paid $500 a week to help look after the kids from Monday to Friday.
  • The nanny works 12-hour days without receiving overtime.
  • Elijah, 7, is in a private school.
  • Each in-vitro procedure typically costs between $8,000 and $15,000.
  • Asked how she was able to afford the treatments, Nadya said she had saved money and used some of the disability payments she received after being injured in a 1999 riot at a state mental hospital where she worked.
  • Nadya says she'll support her children with student loans until she can find a job as a counselor after graduating in 1-2 years
  • Nadya's mother says she spends her entire retirement income caring for the 6 grandchildren who live with her.
  • Nadya had on acrylic nails with French tips when visiting the octuplets in the neonatal ICU, sparking further outrage from people asking why she spent time and money on manicures and acrylics when she has 8 infants in ICU and 6 children at home. (Manicures in the Whittier area range from $20 to $60, acrylic nails are $40 to $65 plus bi-weekly fills (maintenance), which is $22 - $30). She claimed that a friend did her nails in the hospital the night before the C section, however she was seen getting her nails done at a salon by reporters after she was released from the hospital. She then claimed that she was there to have them "cut", however, she was seen with full length, new French Tips while visiting the infants later. (Does anyone go to a salon to have their nails "cut" anyways?). It is worth noting that most hosptials ban acrylic nails on all nurses and on everyone in NICU because they cause staph infections and other serious complications (as well as scratch delicate skin). Nadya is seen in a photo holding her infants and touching their faces with full length acrylic nails on.
  • It was previously reported that Nadya did not get paid for her NBC interview, but sources claim she received at least $300,000
  • She filed a worker's compensation claim in 1999 against the hospital, and another claim in 2001 against the Workers' Compensation Appeals Board.
  • She received a total of $167,908 in disability payments over 7 years.
  • Disability payments stopped during her pregnancy with the octuplets.
  • The hospital has requested reimbursement from Medi-Cal, the state's Medicaid program, for care of the premature babies.
  • Her parents claim they didn't know she's been collecting disability for years until it was revealed in February on the media. They thought she had no income.
  • The cost of egg freezing is approximately $12,750. This fee includes all testing, monitoring and the first year of storage. Each additional year is $300 - $600. There is also a cost for the medications which is paid directly to the pharmacy. The egg thaw, fertilization and embryo transfer procedure total approximately $5,500.
  • It costs approx $300 - $600 per year to store embryos. This must be paid in full in advance by cash, check, or credit card. Shipping costs an additional $150 - $200 plus tank rental (another $100 - $200). There is also lab fees and other expenses. According to Nadya, she had the embryos frozen at the same time, approx 8 years ago.
  • While on government assistance, food stamps, and the house she and her children are living in is in foreclosure (no payments made for 10 months), Nadya has been photographed buying bags full of toys, video games, Starbucks coffee, and having her nails done.

The sperm donor:
  • Nadya claims the sperm donor is named David Solomon
  • Same sperm donor for all 14
  • David Solomon is listed as the father on 4 of the birth certificates.
  • David is reportedly a friend of Nadyas
  • Nadya met David at a nightclub.
  • Nadya and David went to the movies once, and Nadya said she decided she didn’t want him as her boyfriend, but rather for the father of her children.
  • Nadya talks to David just once a year.
  • David does not see the children.
  • David has never met the children.
  • Nadya's mother says David is one of her daughter’s “admirers.”
  • Nadyas mother said that David was in love with Nadya and wanted to marry her, but that she refused to marry him; saying Nadya wanted to have children by herself.
  • Some people question if David Solomon, is real. One reason is that her father’s name is very similar to the name given as the sperm donor. His middle name is Doud, (David in Arabic), and Suleman is a different spelling of Solomon with the same meaning.
  • There is a different birthdate listed for David Solomon on each birth certificate: May 25, 1975 / June 25, 1973 / May 25, 1973 / and June 25 1975.
  • Davids birthplace is listed as Isreal on the birth certificates.

The Specialist:
  • Some fertility specialists say Dr. Kamrava is a controversial figure in the field.
  • Nadya says all 14 of her children were conceived with help from the same doctor
  • Nadyas mother claims she and Nadyas father pleaded with her first fertility doctor not to treat their daughter again. She said her daughter then went to another doctor.
  • The Medical Board of California announced on February 6, 2009 that it was investigating the physician who transferred the embryos in an attempt to substantiate if there was a violation of the standard of care. The Society for Reproductive Medicine has expressed interest in assisting the Board in its investigation.
  • Dr Kamrava also provided fertility treatment to a 49-year-old woman who is uninsured and 5 months pregnant with quadruplets and is hospitalized at County-USC Medical Center. At least 7 embryos were used when all the woman wanted was one child.
  • Dr. Kamrava has a very low success rate in IVF procedures – around 10% compared to a national average of nearly 40%. Yet every one of the 6 embryos took, and 2 of them split into twins.

The Ex-Husband:
  • Nadya married Marcos Gutierrez, in 1996 at the age of 21.
  • Marcos is a produce manager
  • Nadya met Marcos in college
  • Nadya and Marcos stayed together for 4 years, but Nadya said “I was more in love with wanting children.”
  • The couple separated in 2000 and divorced in 2008
  • After her marriage ended she had numerous embryos frozen and then implanted in her womb in batches during subsequent IVF treatments, resulting in the births of her 6 older children.
  • After separating from her husband, moved back in with her parents.
  • Nadya says her desperation to get pregnant — and her devastation when it failed — ruined her marriage.
  • The divorce took 8 years - twice as long as the marriage.
  • Marcos had to keep filing paperwork before finally being granted a divorce by default.
  • Now known as Nadya Suleman on court papers, Marcos listed her, under respondent as "Nadya Doud AKA Natalie Denise Suleman."
  • Divorce papers can be viewed here
  • Marcos told a reporter: "There are a lot of things someone may not fully understand about our marriage."

NEWEST INFORMATION

  • Here is a recording of her 911 Call

  • July 7, 2008, DCFS received a complaint from a neighbor who felt Nadya's 6 kids "were not clean or being fed properly." An investigation was opened, and DCFS took a Suspected Child Abuse Report. Cops went along with DCFS after getting the complaint.
  • On January 9, 2008, someone called 911 after one of Nadya's kids accidentally locked himself/herself in a room. The cops came and a patrol officer piqued the lock.
  • October 27, 2008, Nadya called 911 in a panic because one of her kids was missing. 5 patrol units responded to the house -- turns out the 5-year-old had followed grandma around the block.
  • January 23, 2009, three days before the OctoBabies were born and Nadya was in the hospital, one of the kids called 911 from the house. Reason Unknown.
  • Cops were called by neighbors twice (May 12, 2008 and August 10, 2008) because the front door was left open and they feared a break in.
  • Cops were called to control reporters and when a neighbor brandished a shotgun.
  • Nadya claimed that Calvary Chapel–Golden Springs, a nondenominational megachurch in Diamond Bar, California, will be providing assistance in the form of childcare. The church, when contacted, said they DO NOT EVEN KNOW HER.

Calvary Chapel released a statement on February 13, saying that, in contrast to the claims of Ms. Suleman, the church will not be providing her assistance in the form of establishing a foundation, providing monies, or helping her find a house. Associate pastor Beau De Graffenreid made the following statement in a recorded press conference: "We are unable to confirm or deny whether she actively attends Calvary Chapel, Golden Springs. We can say, however, that no one currently on staff knows her, and to the best of our knowledge, Ms. Suleman’s only contact with us was a minor inquiry regarding our children’s ministry."

  • Killeen Furtney Group, the publicists the Suleman family hired, has dropped the family as clients after a series of death threats
  • Nadya Suleman told Killeen that Wes Yoder, president of Ambassador Agency, signed on as Suleman's agent. Yoder said his company had provided pro bono advice on licensing Suleman family photographs and looked into the possibility of representing them, but decided against it
  • Nadya reportedly admits that she made up "David Solomon" but still insists that she used the same "friend" for all 14 children.

Who's Who?

  • Nadya Suleman: Mother of the octuplets
  • Angla Suleman: Nadyas mother
  • Ed Suleman: Nadyas father
  • David Solomon: The sperm donor of Nadya's 14 children
  • Marcos Gutierrez: Nadya's ex-husband
  • Jonah, Noah, Maliyah, McCai (aka Makai), Isaiah, Nariyah, Jeremiah and Josiah: The octuplets.
  • Elijah; Amerah, Joshua, Aiden, Calyssa, Caleb: Nadya's firs 6 children

Questions raised by public and media:
  • Why would a single mother living at home on disability have IVF?
  • Why would a doctor agree to perform IVF on someone with limited income?
  • Why would a doctor agree to perform IVF on someone with 6 other children?
  • Where did she get the money for IVF?
  • Will her parents get any money she makes from exposure, since they supported her?

Quotes from Nadya:

“Money? Money is necessary to raise children. But it’s — it’s paper. It is paper. To me, it is superfluous in contrast to the importance of my kids.”

When asked by Anne Curry why she didn’t stop having babies, she said that “they deserve siblings.”

Even though she had 6 embryos implanted in her last IVF treatment that “the most I would have ever anticipated was twins.”

“Boyfriends? I think I’d have to be extremely selfish. I cannot maintain a social life and be a mother. To even take 1% of every night and devote it to someone else, a stranger, would be wrong. I have to wait for that until my youngest have left school. I can’t leave someone else trying to care for my kids while I date.”

Nadya has said that her desire to have a large family is the result of growing up an only child and always wanting siblings. She had called her upbringing “dysfunctional.”

“On the first sonogram I saw 5 babies. Then it kept going up. A week later I saw 6, the next week I counted 7. I was praying to God — ‘Don’t let there be any more.’

“There were letters and emails saying we deserved to die. There were protesters in front of my house. There are mentally disturbed people in the world.”

“I can’t yet fathom out how I will take 14 of them to the park, but I have a month to 6 weeks before they all come home"

“I have 3 bedrooms and right now it’s OK — with 6, we fit. I don’t care if it’s not a perfect, immaculate house. It looks a bit like a forest outside, there’s a lot of nature. But I hope I can one day get a bigger house.”

“The nanny is very, very helpful. She works overtime and doesn’t ask for more money. She does 12-hour days.”

“The only reason I applied for them (food stamps) is that I have put Elijah in a private school. He needs tutoring to stay focused. But I am not on welfare where you get cash aid for children. I have never got that.”

“It was a dysfunctional family. When I was growing up they had separate bedrooms — they stayed in the marriage for me. It was significant. I just wanted kids.” (on her parents)

“I am done having children now. My family is complete and I would not change anything.”

"What human on this planet is capable to take care of 14 independently without support from family, from friends, from church? No human is."

Many photos here

Below are 2 photos of Nadya Suleman, showing a vast difference in nose shape, lip volume, hair, and more, showing why so many believe she has had extensive plastic surgery. Many also believe she is trying to emulate Angelina Jolie. The photo on the left was taken sometime between 2002 and 2008, on the right is from Feb 2009.

  1. Just so you can update your blog:

TLC has declined to produce or air a reality show based upon this story. I read a quote that said something to the effect of "TLC did investigate the possibility of doing a reality show based upon the Suleman's but has since declined to get involved. They wish the family well but there will be no reality show on TLC."
